In this week's brief, we will discuss new legislation approved at this year's convention in regards to the new drug testing policy which will go into effect August 1, We will discuss the establishment, general penalties, and the reinstatement process of this new policy.

Students will be selected for testing at random and the testing can occur at any point during the championship. Due to the short length of championships, drug testing results will not be available until after the championship has concluded.
If a student-athlete tests positive, the institution will be notified. If a student tests positive for one or more NAIA banned substance, the student's institution has the right to appeal the results. If a student has a completed a medical exception form, a copy of this form will need to be included in the appeal documentation. Student-athletes taking prescribe medication for legitimate medical purposes may need to complete a medical exemption form.
Students prescribe anabolic agents or peptide hormones must submit the form and receive approval prior to competition. The form, and information about the form, can be found in the Drug Testing Policy manual. While these education tools are not a requirement for eligibility, the NAIA strongly encourages all athletes and athletic department personnel to use these resources to educate themselves to ensure a complete understanding of what is all involved in this new process.
For a student who has been charged a first offense for testing positive for an NAIA banned substance, The following penalties will occur:. The student will be suspended in ALL NAIA championship, invitational and emerging sports for days from the date the testing took place not the date when the results were determined.
Will be charged one additional season of competition for the sport in which the student test positive; and. If a student tests positive a second time, that student-athlete will lose all remaining eligibility within the NAIA. The penalties listed above are for eligibility purposes. What types of drugs will the NAIA be testing for? The NAIA will begin drug testing at national championship events beginning in Falltesting for performance enhancing drugs. Will testing be done at all championships? How will student-athletes be selected? Testing may be done at any National Championship competition.
In accordance with guidelines set forth by the National Drug Testing and Education Committee, the national office will select which championships will incorporate drug testing each year. Each academic year, each student-athlete must sign a Consent Form in which the student consents to be tested for the use of prohibited performance enhancing drugs. The Medical Exemption Form provides a student-athlete with an opportunity to submit verification that the student was taking doctor-prescribed medication that could result in a positive drug test.
In most cases, the Medical Exemption Form does not have to be submitted prior to competition; rather, if a student-athlete is selected for testing and does test positive, the form can be provided to appeal the positive test.

As a best practice, we would also recommend that you work with any of your student-athletes who are taking any other type of doctor-prescribed medication that could result in a positive test to complete the Medical Exemption Form.
Additionally, another best practice is to proactively collect signed Consent Forms from each of your student-athletes in advance and keep them on file. As a first offense, a student-athlete will be immediately suspended from any competition in any sport for days from the date of the test.
The student will also be charged one additional season of competition in all sports. Any student-athlete who tests positive a second time will lose all eligibility within the NAIA in all sports.
